The Martyrdom of Stephen Acts chapter 7.

Pause for thought

Stephen is remembered as the first Christian to give his life for the Lord, and the gospel. He is remembered for the Holy Spirits presence in his life, he was an outstanding leader, teacher, and debater 7:2

The High priest and leading Jews were outraged that rather than defend himself, Stephen went on the attack. speaking by the Holy Spirit he exposed their hearts for displaying the same rebellious spirit just as their ancestors had done when they resisted God throughout the history of Israel. They were uncircumcised in their heart and ears, they thought that because they had been circumcised they were OK. Outward ritual does not make anyone right with God, in fact according to this verse it can cause spiritual deafness 51. And a desire in the heart to return to Egypt and slavery 39

Stephen had been accused of speaking against the Temple 6:13, But he knew that God is not limited to living in Temples made of stone, but in hearts that are open to receive Him Isaiah 66:1-2.

Stephen’s life is a continual challenge to all Christians. Because he was the first to die for the faith, his sacrifice raises questions: How many risks do we take in being Jesus followers? Would we be willing to die for Him? Are we really willing to live for Him? ( N.L.B. foot notes)

A verse to remember

But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily upward into heaven and saw the glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing in the place of honour at God’s right hand. Acts 7:55 N.L.T.

The Partnership of the Gospel, God directed Delegation . Acts 6:1-15.

Pause for thought

Don’t get distracted from your God given task, the Apostles didn’t. Where there is church especially when it is growing, problems arise! On this occasion it was recognised by the Apostles as a genuine need to be addressed, and also they probably saw it as an opportunity to delegate and involve others in the work. They made it clear to the church that they were called to continually pray and teach/preach the word 6:4

This is probably the first recorded church meeting in the Bible Acts 6:2. The Apostles set the brief the men you choose must be of good reputation , full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom. The congregation recommended seven men for Approval for ordination by the Apostles, note the absence of a vote! 6:5-6

Administration is not a lesser calling than Apostleship, the candidates must be full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, wisdom is can be defined as the right application of knowledge Romans 11:33

The Word of God spread like the ripples on a pond, the gospel continues to spread as the Word is preached and Gods children each contribute. Your part whatever it is, is just as important and significant in spreading the gospel 6:7

Stephen was not an apostle, but was a man full of faith and power and did great signs and wonders. He was fast becoming a thorn in the devils side so it’s not surprising that he became a target. When witnessing for Christ we must never forget we are in a spiritual battle, we become targets so we should not think it strange if the devil tries to cause us problems , it simply shows the effectiveness of the Holy Spirits ministry at work in us. 6:11 and 1 Peter 4:12:14.

A verse to remember

Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith. Acts 6:7 N.K.J.V.

Preaching the message of Life Acts 5:17-42

Pause for thought

The Apostles had Angelic help escaping from the prison, this was repeated on other occasions Acts 12:7, 16:26, also in Acts 10:3, and 8:26, and 8:29 an Angel gives instructions to Philip and in 8:39 the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away to his next preaching engagement just a few just a few of the incidents where Angels ministered on behalf of Christians see Hebrews 1:14.

Acts 5 contrasts the disobedience of Ananias and Sophira and the obedience of the Apostle’s, the former were seeking praises from people, the Apostles determined to obey God and seek His praise ( I think any reward they might get was far from their minds) 5:29.

They were to preach “all the words of this life” (N.K.J) these instructions were directly opposite the words of the religious leaders of the day. Like today these are words of LIFE for dying men.

Ananias and Sophira lied to the Holy Spirit. When we preach we must preach what is true, “the whole gospel” then we can be sure of the Spirit’s help alongside John 15:26. For “He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness and judgement”John 16:8-11.

The Home Bible class ( not a modern invention) as well teaching as in the Temple courts was an important way for the early Christians to share their faith 5:42.

A verse to remember

And every day, in the Temple and in their homes, they continued to teach and preach this message “ The Messiah you are looking for is Jesus”

The dishonesty of Ananias and Sapphira Acts 5:1-16

Pause for thought

The church faced internal and external problems as today. Outside, the church faced the pressure of persecution, while inside was pride, dishonesty, and greed. All the while the Apostles didn’t loose their focus on spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. They didn’t cave in to the problems at all but the Holy Spirit made them stand firm. Problems wether within or without can be stepping stones in the purposes of God rather than stumbling blocks 5:12. See also Romans 8:28.

The account of Ananias and Sophia reminds us that Satan prowls around seeking whom he may devour 1 Peter 5:8 This couple were seeking to be noted for their giving, the proceeds from the sale of land that was theirs to do with as they pleased but when they lied to Peter that they were giving all the proceeds of the sale they were lying to God the Holy Spirit. We can’t be certain if these two were Christian’s if so they lost their lives but not their souls. or perhaps they were hangers on like those who now through fear dared not join the church 5:13.

In Mathew 6:3 Jesus said “don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing” he is teaching that our motives for giving to God and to others must be pure. When in leadership I had no idea what members of the fellowship were giving, this was for benefit of all involved for obvious reasons. Best be a secret giver!

A verse to remember

No one else dared join them, though everyone had high regard for them. And more and more people believed and were brought to the Lord, crowds of both men and women. Acts 5:13-14. N.L.T.

Praying for increased Boldness Acts 4:13-37.

Pause for thought

Peter and John’s zeal for the Lord was so strong they could not keep quiet even when threatened. But they knew where their power lay. Which is why when they met together with the rest of the believers they prayed for more boldness, the Lord replied by filling them all again with a fresh dose of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus said, “if anyone acknowledges me publicly here on Earth , I will openly acknowledge that person before my Father in heaven” Mathew 10:32. Our relationship with Jesus although personal is never meant to be kept a secret.

Notice that the disciples didn’t pray for a change of circumstance or a more favourable atmosphere, but for Holy Spirit boldness and more opportunity to do signs and wonders in the name of Jesus. Sometimes we may feel discomfort when we talk about Jesus but personal discomfort is not necessarily persecution. Some set backs can spur us to be more courageous. Christian boldness is never reckless but requires courage to press on despite our fears 4:29.

As the believers prayed they quoted from psalm two, this prophetic psalm foretold the opposition against Christ from the very beginning of His ministry to His Crucifixion. What His will determines, His power carries out. No Army, government, or council is able to stand in Gods way. N.L.T. Foot note 4:28

God’s Sovereignty does not mean that those who were involved in the crucifixion were unable to exercise free will 4:27-28.

A verse to remember

In fact everything they did occurred according to your eternal will and plan. And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give your servants great boldness in their preaching. Acts 4:28-29 N.L.T.

The Powerful Name of Jesus Acts 4:1-13

Pause for thought

The Sadducee’s who did not believe in miracles or in the resurrection were confronted by a man who had been crippled, but now miraculously healed in the name of Jesus whose death they had consented to. This miracle was evidence that Jesus really was alive from the dead and certainly no rumour4:1-2.

The truth of Christs resurrection as proven by the now healed cripple, challenged the views is the Sanhedrin. And when they asked Peter and John “by what power and name have you done this?” Peter did not back down but told it just as it was, This man is whole because God has raised Jesus from the dead and Jesus has healed this man!

Peter and John were bold because they were full of the Holy Spirit, the Sanhedrin recognised that they had been with Jesus. Our testimony maters, do people see a difference in us compared to unbelievers? if not why not? if they do then give God the glory, and keep on being filled with the Holy Spirit like Peter and John 4:13.

All roads do not lead to God, some unbelievers react negatively to this fact “Jesus is the only way to heaven” This is not something the early church decided; it’s what Jesus himself taught, please read John 14:6 there is only one way to be saved from our sins.

A verse to remember

“Nor is there Salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12 N.K.J.V.

Peter preaches powerfully in Solomon’s Porch Acts 3:12-26

Pause for thought

The healing of the man at the Beautiful gate was orchestrated by God, it was a “God incident” in fact Luke makes it clear in Acts 1:1 that what Jesus did and taught until He was taken up into heaven was just the beginning and would continue through the Apostles. When Peter saw his opportunity to speak to the gathered crowd he was not limited by what he could see with his eyes, he was given what to say by the Holy Spirit. No well prepared sermon here! 3:12.

We should always pray for guidance for help with decision making, for not every opportunity is what it seems at first, but there are definitely God opportunities and God moments but they still require faith to proceed 3:11.

Peter pointed out to the astonished crowd that the evidence before them proved that Jesus Christ is alive! And by His power the man was healed. The statement of Peter is most important because it showed the Apostles fully understood that the power was delegated to them by Jesus to do Gods will. This is made very clear in verse 16 Yes the faith that comes through Him (Jesus) has given him this perfect soundness.

Peter showed the crowd who gave him the authority and power to heal, Jesus name proclaimed in faith is a saving name. We must remember that it is Jesus Christ Himself, not the sound of His name who answers our prayers 3:16.

Gods covenant promise to Abraham was never limited in its scope 3:25 -26

A verse to remember

You killed the author of Life, but God raised Him to life. And we are witnesses of this fact! Acts 3:15 N.L.T.

Peter and John heal a crippled beggar. Acts 3:1-10

Pause for thought
“A certain man” 3:2 We are not given the man’s name but we can be sure that he was known by God. No one is unknown to God, what a wonderful thought, we are each known by God, and like this “certain man” we may still be living a beggarly life when God has something much better in store for us. Full Salvation! 3:2

Peter and John were both involved in this healing, notice the man was to look at both Peter and John. As on the day of Pentecost Peter preached but all the apostles stood with Him 2:14. They got the attention of the cripple who was no doubt expecting some money. They spoke a command in the Name of Jesus and a miracle of healing happened Acts 3:6

As they prayed in Jesus name they were exercising the authority that Jesus himself has given them. Peter and John were doing the healing through the Holy Spirit’s power, not their own. Acts 3:6.

The man who had been crippled accompanied the apostles into the Temple, He knew who was responsible for his healing for as he jumped and walked he was praising and giving thanks to God. Thanksgiving is an expression of our faith and often cements in our hearts what God has done , but is not always taught as such.3:8.

When Peter and John met the crippled begged it was not a chance encounter it was a God incident! But it’s unlikely they were expecting what was about to happen. But they were ready! because they were aware of who was in them and on them, the blessed Holy Spirit! But Peter still needed to make a faith statement “ What I have I give unto you in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth” Yet Not I but through Christ in Me. Acts3:6

A verse to remember

Then Peter said “ Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you, In the Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk” Acts 3:6 N.K.J.V.

The New Church after Pentecost. Acts 2:25-47.

Pause for thought

Peter told the people to listen carefully as he explained to them that David when writing Psalm 16.: 8-11 was not speaking of himself, but writing as a Prophet of the Messiah’s resurrection and glorification 2:25-29.

Another of David’s prophecies in psalm 101:1 records the conversation between God the Father and God the Son 2:34.

Peter proves that the resurrection of Jesus the Christ is prophesied by King David in the scriptures, and expects his hearers to readily accept Jesus of Nazareth as their promised Messiah 2:36.

Peters call to those devout Jews to repent, was a call to change their minds about who Jesus really was. They responded and believed that Jesus really was the one David had spoken of, their long promised Messiah who had died to take away their sins. On day one over 3000 new Christians joined the church 2:41-47.

Acts 2:38 Baptism is not a means of forgiveness and salvation ( This verse is better understood as “because of remission of sins” Believers are baptised in water because their sins have already been remitted and because of their faith in Christ, not that sins should be remitted) Although baptism doesn’t save us for the early church there was not a long separation between believing in Christ and getting baptised as is often the case today. And the same can be said about the gift of the Spirit. The words of Peter need to be heard and acted upon today “ repent, believe, and be baptised and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” ( I feel todays church keeps new believers hanging about to long)

A verse to remember

Now He sits on the throne of highest honour in heaven, at God’s right hand. And the Father as He had promised, gave Him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you hear and see today Acts 2:33 N.L.T.
